D-Wave

D-Wave is best known for quantum annealers: superconducting machines with thousands of qubits built for one job, finding low-energy answers to optimisation and physics-simulation problems, rather than running general quantum programs. Its current annealer, Advantage2, is offered through its Leap cloud service and sold for on-site installation. In 2026 it bought Quantum Circuits to speed up a separate gate-model effort based on 'dual-rail' superconducting qubits that can flag their own errors. The first small gate-model system is promised for 2026.

Recent claims, and how far the evidence has got

  • Disputed 'Beyond-classical' (quantum supremacy) simulation of quantum spin-glass dynamics on an Advantage2 prototype, which the company estimated would take about a million years on the Frontier supercomputer Source
  • Peer-reviewed ~99.9% fidelity entangling gate between dual-rail erasure qubits (~500 ns gate time) Source
  • Announced Scalable on-chip cryogenic control of gate-model qubits, with far fewer control lines Source
